A Canadian scientist has voiced concerns about being barred from researching a puzzling neurological disorder in New Brunswick, a condition that could potentially affect over 200 individuals.

In an email obtained by the Guardian, Michael Coulthart, a prominent microbiologist, expressed his frustrations two years after an official investigation into the disease was closed. “All I will say is that my scientific view is that there is something real going on in New Brunswick that cannot be explained by the bias or personal agenda of an individual neurologist,” Coulthart wrote. “Some cases can be explained, but there are simply too many now—over 200,” he added.

 Canadian Authorities' Stance

In 2021, New Brunswick health officials reported that over 40 residents were exhibiting symptoms of a potentially unknown neurological syndrome. These symptoms, which resembled those of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, varied widely: some patients experienced excessive saliva production, while others felt as though insects were crawling on their skin.

However, an independent panel concluded a year later that these patients were suffering from other known conditions, such as dementia and cancer.

 Conflicting Scientific Views

Emails exchanged among scientists reveal a different perspective. Researchers at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) have continued to express concerns about this mysterious illness, which predominantly affects young people. In messages sent in October 2023, Coulthart, who led the 2021 investigation, indicated he had been sidelined, suspecting political motives behind his exclusion. “I believe the truth will be confirmed in time, but for now all we can do ... is continue to collect information on cases that come to us as suspected illness,” Coulthart wrote.

He argued that the disease's complexity has allowed politicians to claim there's “nothing coherent.” Copies of these emails were forwarded to a parliamentary health committee in March by a patient support group, yet no action has been taken.

 Patient Complaints and Government Inaction

Patients have expressed frustration over the lack of response from officials. “Politicians don't want to acknowledge that something serious is happening because then they will have to deal with it,” said a young woman suffering from tremors, poor muscle coordination, and problems with her vision and memory.

“My condition is progressing and things have become much more difficult for me,” she lamented.

This ongoing saga highlights the tension between scientific inquiry and political oversight, with significant implications for those affected by the mysterious disorder.
