Greek Man Arrested in Italy for 47-Year-Old Double Murder of Australians
International Warrant Leads to Capture After Years of Evasion
A Greek man wanted for the double murder of two Australians 47 years ago has been arrested in Italy after arriving for a holiday. The suspect, a 65-year-old Greek-Australian national, was taken into custody at Rome's Fiumicino airport on Thursday, following an international arrest warrant issued seven years ago when he was identified as the perpetrator.
The murders, which occurred in Melbourne in 1977, involved the brutal stabbing of Susanne Armstrong and Susan Bartlett, aged 27 and 28, respectively. The two women were found dead in their apartment, with numerous stab wounds inflicted by their attacker. The only survivor of the crime was Armstrong's sixteen-month-old child, who was sleeping in a nearby room at the time.
Australian police described the crime as exceptionally brutal and managed to identify the suspect through DNA testing. Reports indicate that the man had lived in Greece for many years, where laws prevented the arrest of individuals for murder after a period of 20 years had elapsed since the crime.
Upon his arrival in Italy, the man was apprehended immediately, and Australian authorities plan to seek his extradition. However, legal experts suggest that the extradition process may take up to a year to resolve. The case has reignited interest in the tragic events of 1977 and the long quest for justice for the victims.
