In a powerful show of opposition, over 160,000 people took to the streets of Berlin on Sunday evening to protest against the growing influence of the far-right and the potential collaboration between Germany's Christian Democratic Party (CDU) and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).

According to organizers, the crowd swelled to an estimated 250,000 as demonstrators gathered outside the German parliament and marched toward the CDU headquarters.

The protesters, many of whom were chanting slogans like “Fritz, listen to mum” (a reference to Angela Merkel, affectionately known as “mum” during her tenure as Chancellor), “It’s 1933 to 5,” and “Keep the firewall,” voiced their concerns about the increasing political power of the far-right and the danger of mainstream parties like the CDU working with AfD.

The protests were not confined to Berlin. In Potsdam, around 2,500 people gathered to call for democratic parties to distance themselves from far-right ideologies, while similar demonstrations took place across Germany. On Saturday, rallies in cities such as Hamburg saw impressive turnouts, with at least 65,000 participants, who stood in solidarity to protect democracy.

The movement has gained significant momentum in recent weeks, as concerns grow over the potential repercussions of far-right alliances in German politics. The demonstrations reflect the country's deep anxieties about the future of its political landscape, with many calling for a firm commitment to democratic values and a rejection of extremist elements.
