Israeli forces have completed their withdrawal from the Nejarim corridor, a critical military zone that divided Gaza into two halves, furthering the implementation of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas that was activated on January 19. This pivotal move allows hundreds of Palestinians, many in cars and carts loaded with essential belongings, to return to northern Gaza after months of displacement.
The ceasefire deal, which has already seen the release of 21 Israeli hostages and 566 Palestinian prisoners, is expected to continue with further exchanges. By the end of the first phase in three weeks, 33 Hamas hostages and 1,900 Israeli prisoners are expected to be released, although Israeli officials report that eight of the 33 Hamas captives are deceased.
The Gaza Interior Ministry, under Hamas, has urged caution as residents return to northern Gaza, reminding them to adhere to movement guidelines for their safety. For months, many Palestinians in Gaza had been forced to relocate multiple times due to Israeli military operations, with many displaced from the north to the south of the strip.
The Israeli military had earlier given mass evacuation orders to northern Gaza before launching a ground invasion.
As for the security checks in place, vehicles returning to northern Gaza must pass through Salah al-Din Street, undergoing weapons inspections by US and Egyptian officials. Meanwhile, the Rashid coastal road has also reopened for pedestrian use following the partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from the western part of the Nejarim corridor.
Simultaneously, Israeli security forces have expanded their operations in the West Bank, particularly in Noor Sams, as part of a counter-terrorism operation in Jenin that began on January 21. Described as large-scale, the operation resulted in the death of several Palestinian militants and the detainment of numerous individuals suspected of involvement in terrorist activities.
This complex web of military and diplomatic maneuvers continues to shape the fragile situation in both Gaza and the West Bank, as efforts to negotiate peace remain amid heightened military actions.
