  • LGBTQ+ Attacks Rise in Europe Despite Drop in Discrimination
New research from the European Union's Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) reveals that while discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals has decreased slightly over the past three years, the incidence of physical and sexual assaults has increased. The research, released on Tuesday, highlights a rise in violent attacks on members of the LGBTQ+ community. Conducted online in June, July, and August 2023, the poll surveyed over 100,000 self-identified LGBTQ+ individuals. The findings show only minor overall changes compared to a similar poll conducted three years ago. "More LGBTQ+ people in Europe are now open about their identity. But at the same time, they face more violence, harassment, and intimidation than before," the Vienna-based FRA stated. Data adjusted for comparison between the two surveys indicate that 14% of respondents from the 27 EU member states reported experiencing physical or sexual assault due to their LGBTQ+ identity in the five years preceding the poll, up from 11% in the previous survey. "Being an open member of the LGBTQ+ community in Europe should not be a struggle. Although we are seeing signs of progress, bullying, harassment, and violence remain constant threats," said FRA head Shireen Rotio. The research identified Bulgaria (18%) and Latvia (17%) as countries where LGBTQ+ individuals are most vulnerable. Bisexual and intersex people reported the highest rates of attacks. In the year before the latest survey, 36% of respondents across the EU felt discriminated against in at least one area of their lives due to their LGBTQ+ identity, down from 42% in the previous survey. Bulgaria and Cyprus had the highest percentages of discrimination at 48%. Intersex (61%) and transgender (54%) individuals reported the highest rates of discrimination. The survey covered various aspects of life, including the workplace, education, healthcare, interactions with public services, and treatment in shops, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Additionally, the survey included countries with EU candidate status, namely Albania, North Macedonia, and Serbia.

  • Pioneering Pig Kidney Transplant: A Bittersweet Breakthrough
The first living patient to receive a genetically modified kidney from a pig died two months after the procedure, the US hospital that performed it has announced. Richard Sleiman, 62, from Boston, was living with end-stage kidney disease when he decided to receive a kidney from a pig that had undergone 69 genome modifications in what experts said would mark "a new era" in organ transplantation. Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) said on Sunday that there was no indication that his death was the result of the transplant. Transplants of other organs from genetically modified pigs have failed in the past, but the operation on Mr. Sleiman was hailed as a historic milestone. In addition to kidney disease, Mr. Sleiman also suffered from type 2 diabetes and hypertension. In 2018, he underwent a human kidney transplant, but it began to fail after five years. After the pig kidney transplant on March 16, his doctors confirmed that he no longer needed dialysis, as the new organ appeared to be working well. "Slayman will forever be considered a beacon of hope for countless transplant patients around the world, and we are deeply grateful for his trust and willingness to advance the field of xenotransplantation," the hospital statement said. Organ shortages are a chronic problem around the world, and the United Nations said in March that there were more than 1,400 patients on its waiting list for kidney transplants.

  • Cosmic Light Show: Aurora Borealis Dazzles Far South in Rare Solar Storm Spectacle
On a particularly electric Friday night, a rare celestial event unfolded as the Northern Lights decided to throw a dazzling party and extended an invitation far south into Europe, much to the delight of stargazers. This was a unique occurrence, a powerful solar storm dancing with Earth's atmosphere, and the usually elusive aurora borealis making an unprecedented appearance over the UK, Germany, England, and several other spectators in the northern hemisphere. The spectacle was so awe-inspiring that even the scientifically minded were swept up in the marvel. "I feel like I'm having a religious experience—or an alien abduction. Not sure which," tweeted David Boyce, a scientist from England, encapsulating the mystique as reported by the Guardian. Meanwhile, another observer in Edinburgh shared a snapshot, claiming the city was "a different planet tonight." The sheer wonder of the event was palpable. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) flagged this celestial event as the first severe solar storm since 2005. It was so potent that it energized the Northern Lights into showing off in regions as unexpected as Scotland, northern England, Wales, Germany, and Switzerland. Aurora borealis typically throws its light parties between 60 and 75 degrees latitude, but when the solar winds are right, it ventures further south to share the glow. In the US, NOAA sounded the alarm for this rare geomagnetic storm, prompting power plants and orbital spacecraft to brace for impact. Yet, for most Earth dwellers, this was simply a grand spectacle gifted by the cosmos. "This is a gift from space weather—the aurora borealis," commented Rob Steenburgh, a NASA Space Weather Center scientist. This "infrequent event" stemmed from an active sunspot swarm that had been busy firing off solar flares since Wednesday. This solar fiesta made the Northern Lights visible much further south than usual. Steenburgh noted that smartphone cameras, with their knack for capturing faint light, might have snagged the best views of the celestial dance. The storm's climax was anticipated as at least seven solar mass ejections converged and hurtled toward Earth. Although NOAA anticipated the geomagnetic party to rage into the weekend, they suggested finding spots with minimal light pollution and looking north for the prime viewing experience. Social media was abuzz with posts from many who witnessed the aurora without even seeking it out. Meanwhile, NASA reassured them that the solar storm, while a magnificent display, posed no grave threat to the seven astronauts aboard the International Space Station. However, precautions were in place to shield them from elevated radiation levels. This increased radiation also posed a risk to some of NASA's science satellites, which could be temporarily shut down to avoid damage, ensuring the safety of humans and technology. As the earth and sun continued their interstellar tango, heliophysics scientists like Antti Pulkkinen were all eyes, monitoring the event with keen interest. "These are exactly the things we want to observe," said Pulkkinen, excited about the insights that such solar phenomena could unfold. Thus, as the Northern Lights painted the sky in surreal colors, professionals and enthusiasts alike were reminded of our universe's dynamic and vibrant nature.

  • Revealing the Face of Our Ancient Kin: The Neanderthal Woman of Shanidar
Transport yourself back 75,000 years ago amidst a rugged landscape where early humans and their enigmatic relatives, the Neanderthals, roamed. Imagine encountering one of these ancient beings face-to-face, peering into the eyes of a creature so similar yet distinct from ourselves. Thanks to modern science's marvels and intrepid researchers' dedication, we've been granted a glimpse into this distant past. In a tale almost lifted from the pages of a gripping archaeological adventure, scientists have unveiled a stunning recreation of a Neanderthal woman, breathing life into the fragments of a skull discovered in the depths of Iraq's Shanidar cave. But this wasn't a simple task; the skull's bones were as fragile as a "well-submerged biscuit," requiring delicate handling akin to piecing together a centuries-old puzzle. The fragility of these bones, so ancient and yet so delicate, is a testament to the passage of time and the resilience of our human ancestors. With meticulous care, the shattered remnants were fortified and meticulously reassembled, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the visage of our ancient relative. Guided by the expertise of paleoartists, a three-dimensional model emerged, casting light on the features of a being who once walked the earth alongside our ancestors. The model revealed a robust, heavily browed face, a characteristic feature of Neanderthals, and a cranial capacity similar to that of modern humans. This remarkable reconstruction, which you are about to witness, takes center stage in the forthcoming documentary "Secrets of the Neanderthals," a collaborative masterpiece between BBC Studios and Netflix. Dr. Emma Pomeroy, a paleoanthropologist from the University of Cambridge who was involved in the project, shares her excitement: "It can help us connect to who they were. It's fascinating and a huge privilege to work with the remains of any person, but especially one as special as she is." Your interest and curiosity are integral to this journey. The journey to resurrect this ancient face began with the discovery of the fragmented skull within the cavernous depths of Shanidar, a site that has yielded a wealth of Neanderthal remains. Nestled amidst the remains of fellow Neanderthals, the find sparked renewed interest and intrigue. Professor Graeme Barker of Cambridge, leading the excavation, describes the skull's initial state as 'essentially flat as a pizza,' a stark contrast to the lifelike form it would eventually assume. The process of resurrection was arduous, requiring delicate handling and painstaking reconstruction. With the blessings of local authorities, the fragile fragments embarked on a voyage to the UK, where they underwent meticulous stabilization and assembly. This was a collaborative effort, with experts from various fields, including paleoanthropology, archaeology, and forensic science, pooling their knowledge and skills to bring this ancient face back to life. The result? A reborn skull, ready to divulge its secrets to modern eyes. However, the significance of this discovery extends beyond mere aesthetics. As the researchers delved deeper, they uncovered clues to the Neanderthal's identity. While the absence of pelvic bones posed a challenge, dominant proteins in tooth enamel hinted at a female lineage. Moreover, the worn-down teeth suggested a life marked by experience, indicating that this enigmatic woman likely traversed her world for over four decades. This discovery is a key puzzle piece in our understanding of human evolution, inviting us to question and explore our shared past. As we marvel at the striking sculpture gracing our screens, let us not forget that the true treasure lies in the bones. Each fracture and fissure tells a story, offering a bridge to our shared past and illuminating the mysteries of our evolutionary journey. Through the eyes of this Neanderthal woman, we catch a fleeting glimpse of our ancient kin, reminding us of the intricate tapestry of life that binds us across millennia.

  • Harvard University's Ethical Dilemma: Removing Human Skin Binding from 19th-Century Book
Harvard University recently made a significant decision regarding a 19th-century book housed within its library's collection, opting to remove its binding made of human skin due to the ethical concerns surrounding its origin. The book in question, Des Destinées de l'Ame (Destinies of the Soul), has resided in Harvard's Houghton Library since the 1930s. However, it gained widespread attention in 2014 upon confirming through tests that its cover was indeed crafted from human skin. In a statement released on Wednesday, the university conveyed that, following a thorough examination involving various stakeholders, the decision was made to detach the human skin binding. Furthermore, Harvard pledged to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure the respectful preservation of the binding post-removal. Authored by Arsène Houssaye, a French novelist, in the mid-1880s, the book delves into contemplations on the essence of the soul and the afterlife. It was originally bound with human skin by Ludovic Bouland, a French doctor who acquired the material from a deceased patient at the hospital where he practiced, purportedly without her consent. Reflecting on this historical misstep, Harvard acknowledged the egregious nature of Bouland's actions, emphasizing the violation of the patient's dignity. The university expressed a belief that it is now time to lay to rest the remains associated with such unethical practices. In the past, Harvard's handling of this revelation was marked by a somewhat flippant attitude, as evidenced by instances of ritual hazing among students tasked with accessing the book without prior knowledge of its macabre cover. However, the university now recognizes the inappropriateness of this approach, expressing regret for its previous lighthearted treatment of the matter. The practice of anthropodermal bookbinding, though prevalent in the 19th century, has roots dating back to at least the 1500s. Harvard's acknowledgment of the morbid historical context surrounding the book's binding underscores a commitment to rectifying past insensitivities and upholding the dignity of all individuals involved.

  • Global Price Check: Exploring the World's Most Expensive and Affordable Cities
Delving into the dynamic dance of global economics, the EIU's Worldwide Cost of Living research reveals a spirited uptick in the cost of living, averaging a sprightly 7.4% surge yearly, keeping pace with local currency shifts. While this growth moderates from the 8.1% of yesteryear, it gallantly outpaces the 2017–2021 norm. Crowning the podium for the ninth time in 11 years, Singapore proudly claims the title of the world's costliest city, snugly sharing the throne with Zurich, edging out the erstwhile champ, New York, to a bronze. Across the pond, the American trio of New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco dazzle in the top echelons of expenditure, though North American cities as a collective find themselves in a downward spiral in the rankings. In the scenic landscape of Western Europe, where cobblestones whisper tales of yore, four of its illustrious cities adorn the roster of extravagance, fueled by a steady inflationary rhythm in gastronomic delights and haute couture. Meanwhile, the Kremlin's gaze oversees a tumble in fortunes for Moscow and St. Petersburg, courtesy of sanctions unsettling the ruble's stride. Trailing gracefully at the tail end of opulence, Athens presents a modest bill amidst the world's elite, clocking in at a serene 60 as compared to New York's benchmark 100. Skipping merrily across continents, the survey spotlights 173 global hubs, with Kiev and Caracas spectating from the sidelines, gripped in the throes of hyperinflation. Behold the pantheon of priciness: 1) Zurich and Singapore (104) 2) New York and Geneva (100) 3) Hong Kong (98) 4) Los Angeles (97) 5) Paris (91) 6) Tel Aviv and Copenhagen (89) 7) San Francisco (86) On the flip side of the coin, Damascus, a storied city now cloaked in the shadows of strife, bears the badge of the cheapest metropolis, a mere 13 against New York's golden century. The Middle East and Africa, largely shouldering the mantle of thrift, see six of their own in the bottom tier of the list, though outliers like Tel Aviv and Amman hold court as regional royalty, commanding prices akin to their Western counterparts, pre-dating the Gaza strife. Venturing into the heart of sub-Saharan Africa, Harare emerges as its costliest gem, while Douala, Cameroon, in a spirited leap, scales 16 rungs to reach 112. Behold, the oasis of affordability: 1) Damascus (13) 2) Tehran (20) 3) Tripoli (23) 4) Tunisia (32) 5) Lusaka (33)

  • Tragedy Strikes Moscow: More Than 100 Fatalities in Terrorist Assault, 11 Suspects Apprehended
The terrorist assault that transpired at a concert venue in Krasnogorsk, Moscow, has reverberated across the global community, leaving it stunned. On the fateful night of March 22nd, five assailants forcibly entered "Crocus City Hall" and unleashed a barrage of gunfire, tragically claiming lives, including those of three children. Subsequent reports indicate the apprehension of suspects involved in the heinous act. Addressing the aftermath, Russia's Health Minister, Mikhail Murashko, disclosed in the early hours that 115 individuals were hospitalized, among whom were five children. President Vladimir Putin, as reported by TASS news agency, expressed his wishes for a swift recovery for the injured. The Kremlin received updates on the situation from FSB chief Aleksandr Bortnikov. In a chilling assertion, ISIS claimed responsibility for the atrocity through a Telegram post, asserting that the assailants had successfully withdrawn to their bases after assaulting a large gathering of Christians in Krasnogorsk, inflicting extensive casualties and damage. Moscow's intelligence services have identified five individuals from the Ingushetia region near Russia's border with Georgia as potential suspects in the concert hall massacre. The authorities have released images of these individuals to the public, with three of them identified by name: Amirkan Gurazev (born in 1989), Adam Ozdoev (born in 1987), and Zelimkhan Churov (born in 2000). Law enforcement recovered a customized Kalashnikov rifle, ammunition, and other weaponry used in the attack, initiating ballistics investigations. According to reports from the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, the terrorists fled the scene in a white Renault Symbol with tinted rear windows. The tragic events unfolded as concertgoers awaited a performance by the Soviet-era rock band "Picnic," with gunmen interrupting the tranquility by indiscriminately opening fire, prompting panic and chaos. Subsequently, Russian authorities took swift action, leading to the arrest of individuals linked to the attack. According to Kremlin sources, the FSB head reported to President Putin the apprehension of eleven individuals, including four directly involved in the terrorist assault. The footage depicting the assailants clad in camouflage uniforms, unleashing terror upon the unsuspecting crowd, underscores the gravity of one of the deadliest terrorist acts witnessed in Russia in recent years. The perpetrators resorted to grenade or incendiary bomb use, exacerbating the chaos and facilitating the rapid spread of fire within the concert hall premises. Notably, the tragedy unfolded against the backdrop of a prior warning issued by the US embassy in Russia, cautioning about potential extremist activities targeting large gatherings in Moscow, including concerts. This advisory, issued on March 7th, came amidst ongoing counterterrorism efforts by Russian authorities, including an operation on March 3rd resulting in the neutralization of six suspected ISIS militants in Ingushetia. In response to Western warnings, President Putin rebuffed them as "provocative," denouncing them as attempts to destabilize Russia. Putin's sentiments, conveyed before the FSB, underscored Russia's steadfast stance against external interference and its commitment to combating terrorism within its borders.

In the heart of Nuremberg, Germany, archaeologists have unveiled a profound testament to the perils of the past: the largest mass grave ever unearthed in Europe. Amidst ongoing excavations, more than 500 individuals have been meticulously uncovered, with researchers projecting a total tally of approximately 1,500 souls interred within its somber confines. While the precise chronicle of this burial ground remains to be definitively unraveled, preliminary assessments suggest its origins trace back to the early 17th century. Evidently, this tomb served as a harrowing repository for victims of a devastating plague epidemic, serving as a poignant reminder of the relentless toll exacted by infectious disease upon communities of yore. In the coming months, meticulous efforts will ensue to secure and categorize each discovered remains as the excavation presses onward. By the advent of spring, it is anticipated that this site will stand as an unparalleled testament to the magnitude of plague-related fatalities in Europe, bearing witness to a chapter of history fraught with anguish and loss. The specter of epidemic disease has long haunted the annals of European history, with echoes of the Black Death reverberating for centuries thereafter, ravaging cities and towns with merciless impunity. Nuremberg, once a vibrant hub of culture and commerce, found itself ensnared within the sinister grip of these recurrent outbreaks, as attested by the poignant remnants of this sprawling mass grave. Notably, the absence of traditional Christian burial rites within this burial ground underscores the exigency of the crisis, wherein a vast multitude of souls were consigned to their final resting place with haste and without customary reverence. A poignant manuscript dating back to 1634 offers a chilling glimpse into the magnitude of the calamity, noting a plague outbreak that claimed the lives of an estimated 15,000 individuals within Nuremberg's besieged confines. Moreover, the significance of this discovery transcends mere archaeological intrigue, offering a poignant insight into the indiscriminate nature of the plague's onslaught. Amongst the interred are children, elders, and individuals of varied social strata, a stark testament to the egalitarian ravages of disease that transcended boundaries of age, gender, and station in life. In essence, this historic revelation heralds a watershed moment in our understanding of Nuremberg's tumultuous past, affording scholars an unprecedented opportunity for empirical analysis of a populace beleaguered by epidemic strife. As custodians of this profound heritage, it behooves us to approach this discovery with the utmost reverence and responsibility, ensuring that its profound significance is preserved for posterity.

  • Unveiling Russia's Electoral Landscape: A Closer Look at Putin's Grip on Power
In the looming shadow of the Russian presidential elections set from March 15 to March 17, all eyes turn to the inevitability of another victory for Vladimir Putin, Russia's enigmatic leader. With a tenure spanning 25 years, Putin's dominance appears unassailable, having systematically neutralized any opposition that dared challenge his authority. His reign already outlasts all others in Russian history except Joseph Stalin and even surpasses the lengthy tenure of Leonid Brezhnev. Against a backdrop of recent tumult—marked by Alexei Navalny's tragic demise, nationwide protests, and the enduring conflict in Ukraine—Putin stands poised to extend his rule once more. Russian Elections: March 15–17 As the nation gears up for elections, scheduled from March 15 to March 17, anticipation mounts over the outcome. This year's electoral landscape bears new contours, notably with voting extending to what Russia deems "new territories," including regions of Ukraine under Russian control. Moreover, a groundbreaking introduction awaits: the implementation of an internet voting system, a first in Russian presidential elections. A vast electorate of approximately 112.3 million eligible voters, along with 1.9 million abroad and 12,000 in the Baikonur Cosmodrome of Kazakhstan, underscores the scale of participation. Historically, turnout has ranged between 70 and 80 million voters, with a notable 67.5% participation rate recorded in the 2018 elections. Putin and His 'Opponents' While four candidates grace the ballot, their presence is merely symbolic, and Putin's dominance remains unchallenged. His challengers, including communist Nikolai Kharitonov, nationalist Leonid Slutsky, and Vladislav Davankov of the New People's Party, stand as faint echoes against Putin's towering incumbency. Notably absent from the race are dissenting voices like Boris Nadezhdin and Yekaterina Dudchova, who denied candidacy. Putin's Prolonged Reign: A Constitutional Maneuver Putin's political longevity defies precedent, bolstered by constitutional amendments that extend his term and nullify term limits, effectively paving the path for him to rule until 2036. These revisions, initiated in 2008 and solidified in 2020, have reshaped Russia's political landscape, fueling international debate over Putin's consolidation of power. International Perceptions and Domestic Realities Perceptions of Putin vary drastically between the East and West. While Western nations decry him as a dictator and aggressor, domestically, Putin commands overwhelming approval, with approval ratings soaring above 85%. The Kremlin rebuffs Western criticism, asserting Russia's right to self-governance and denouncing external interference in its electoral processes. Challenges and Calls for Change Despite the veneer of stability, discontent simmers beneath the surface. Navalny's supporters, undeterred by his passing, rallied against Putin's regime, calling for mass protests on election day. Navalny's widow, Yulia Navalnaya, echoes his call for dissent, urging citizens to defy Putin through collective action. As the nation braces for another chapter in its political saga, the world watches closely, grappling with the complex interplay of power, democracy, and dissent in Putin's Russia.

  • Eclipsed Antics: Animals Set to Steal the Show in Upcoming Solar Spectacle
Get ready for the ultimate cosmic theatrics as a celestial event of astronomical proportions takes center stage in April—the full solar eclipse that's set to cast its shadow across a significant swath of the United States. Beyond the mesmerizing display in the sky, scientists are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to once again witness the enchanting and sometimes downright peculiar behaviors of the animal kingdom. Picture this: a total eclipse, where the moon's disk delicately embraces the solar disk, plunging the surroundings into darkness for a few spellbinding minutes. This celestial dance has been known to trigger unexpected reactions from our furry and feathery friends. During past eclipses, a surreal hush has descended upon the animal kingdom, with birds, insects, and animals momentarily halting their usual activities, seemingly befuddled by the cosmic spectacle. Venture into zoos during these cosmic occurrences, and you'll find a menagerie of captivating antics. Flamingos forming protective circles around their offspring, giraffes galloping in joyous loops, airborne flocks mysteriously vanishing from the radar only to perch in trees, and even ancient Galapagos tortoises engaging in unexpected mating rituals. It's a zoological party, and the animals are dancing to the rhythm of the cosmos. Recalling the 2017 total solar eclipse, scientists were astonished by the animal kingdom's response. "I thought it would be nonsense; I didn't think animals would be affected at all. It was so ephemeral," remarked Adam Hartstone-Rose, a professor of comparative anatomy at the University of Carolina. Fast forward to 2024, and scientists are gearing up for another round of curious observations. In a bid to broaden their insights, scientists are calling on citizens to join the cosmic safari. Pets, too, are included in these studies, although veterinarians emphasize that the critters may respond more to the human spectacle of excitement and anxiety than the celestial occurrence itself. The saga of peculiar animal behavior during eclipses doesn't stop there. In 2017, researchers conducted a captivating study at a zoo in Columbia, South Carolina. Over 40 keen observers watched 12 animal exhibits, noting intriguing alterations in behavior. Flamingos gathered protectively, giraffes embarked on impromptu sprints, bears displayed nonchalance, and Galapagos tortoises initiated unexpected mating rituals. It was a celestial soap opera, and the animals stole the spotlight. For the upcoming eclipse in 2024, the scientific stage is set for a grand encore. Observations will span zoos across the country, offering a diverse canvas for wildlife spectacle. With a particular interest in bonobos' reactions, scientists are eager to explore whether these sexually charged primates will resort to their unique stress-relief mechanism—mating. The phenomenon of animal bewilderment during eclipses is not lost on Andrew Farnsworth, a visiting scientist at Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology. "Animals just don't know what to do with eclipses because it's not something their biology is adapted for," he remarks. From flamingos to bears and even birds tracked by radar, the response to the sudden celestial darkness is as diverse as the animal kingdom itself. In 2017, Farnsworth and his team used radar to unveil the secrets of bird behavior during the eclipse, a project they plan to expand during the upcoming cosmic event. The takeaway? Birds, from raptors to insect-hunting species, alter their flight patterns, seeking refuge in roosting or descending to the surface in spectacular cloud formations visible on radar scans. As the countdown to the 2024 eclipse begins, researchers are amping up their efforts, planning to monitor a more extensive network of radar stations, spanning from Texas to Maine. To maximize the eyes on the ground (and in the air), a citizen science program named SolarEclipseSafari.org has been launched. This initiative invites people nationwide to become cosmic observers, collecting valuable data on how both wild and domestic animals react during the eclipse. So, mark your calendars, prepare for the celestial show, and keep an eye on the animal antics that promise to be the highlight of this cosmic extravaganza!

  • Witch Hunts to Women's Bonds: Unraveling the Tapestry of History and Friendship
Travel back to 14th-century Italy, and you'll find a fascinating twist in the narrative of women's empowerment. Imagine this: back then, if a woman faced abuse, she could take the matter straight to court – no need for intermediaries! Samuel K. Cohn Jr. dropped this historical bomb in his research, “Women in Social and Forensic Life in Renaissance Florence,” challenging our perceptions of women's roles in history. Fast forward to the present day, and we're still grappling with the echoes of that past. While women no longer fight for the exact same rights, the battles rage on, shaped by the processes that evolved over seven centuries. How did the vibrant sisterhood of the late Middle Ages, where women engaged in collective endeavors, create unbreakable bonds, and thrived, devolve into the ruthless witch hunts of the 15th to 19th centuries? Enter Silvia Federici, a powerhouse feminist and academic. In her extension of "Caliban and the Witch" titled "The Witch Hunt Yesterday and Today" (2018) , she delves deep into the social, historical, and political conditions that fueled mass trials and executions of women. Shockingly, this crime remains largely unacknowledged and ignored by parts of our historical records. Picture this: medieval women, middle and lower class, gathering in taverns, sharing drinks, and weaving close bonds. They relished a certain independence from men, sewing, washing, and even giving birth in the company of other women. This camaraderie and their tavern escapades found their way into satirical plays, portraying women as defiant and unyielding. However, as time ticked on, satire morphed into criticism, painting women as tyrants and threats to public order. The scales tipped, with attacks on women labeled as 'hags,' 'witches,' and 'scolds.' European women found themselves gradually excluded from livelihoods, arts, and crafts, confined to homes, and stripped of bonds and communication. The church and legislators championed obedience as a wife's primary duty, and punishment for 'gossiping' took chilling forms – like the 'harness bridle,' a metal and leather gag that cut a woman's tongue if she dared to speak out. In this oppressive atmosphere, female friendships were targeted, with women tortured to betray their friends or relatives. Now, cut to today, where 'gossip' has taken a lighthearted turn, representing casual chatter that may cause harm. Yet, it still carries a negative connotation, unfortunately tied to the female gender. This modern concept of 'gossip' perpetuates stereotypes constructed to justify historical persecution and exclusion of women from their rights. Consider the stereotypical view of female friendship – often far from innocent. Yet, intriguingly, many communities worldwide recognize women's speech as part of the oral tradition, preserving stories and narratives. But where is this perception in the 'advanced' Western world? In the midst of the current feminist movement fighting for #metoo, femicide awareness, and abortion rights, redefining female friendship and solidarity emerges as a more crucial issue than ever. The battle isn't just historical; It's a call to reshape our present and future. All information in the article is taken from Silvia Federici's book The Witch Hunt Yesterday and Today (2018).
