The remains of a vegetarian dinosaur, estimated to have lived around 125 million years ago, have been discovered on the Isle of Wight in England. Scientists believe this is the most complete dinosaur specimen found in Britain in a century.
This herbivorous dinosaur, which weighed as much as a giant male American bison (approximately 900 kilograms), likely lived in herds. Jeremy Lockwood, a PhD candidate at the University of Portsmouth who participated in the excavations, provided insights into the dinosaur's lifestyle and significance.
The remains, consisting of 149 bones, were uncovered on the rocks of Compton Bay on the Isle of Wight, off the southern coast of England, in 2013 by the late fossil collector Nick Chase. Due to the skeleton's near-complete nature, Lockwood and his colleagues spent several years meticulously preparing the dinosaur for analysis.
The dinosaur has been named "Comptonodus chasei" in honor of Nick Chase. "Nick had a remarkable talent for discovering dinosaur bones," Lockwood commented. “This is an exceptional find that enhances our understanding of the diverse types of dinosaurs that inhabited England during the early Cretaceous period.”
In addition to this significant herbivorous discovery, the Isle of Wight has yielded other notable finds. In 2022, the remains of a carnivorous dinosaur, believed to be larger than any other dinosaur found in Europe, were also discovered on the island. This predator, which lived during the same Cretaceous period, adds another layer to the rich prehistoric tapestry of the region.
These discoveries underscore the Isle of Wight's importance as a site for paleontological research, offering valuable insights into the diversity and evolution of dinosaurs that once roamed this part of the world.
